Many people assume that women wear wigs, weaves and hair extensions is because they are not happy with their natural hair. However, most of the time this is not true! There are many different reasons women enjoy wearing wings. For starters, a lot of women wear wigs today because it is “in fashion,” protects hair and scalp. Other women wear wigs because of religious beliefs and loss of hair due to medical reasons.

The Many Reason Why Women Wear Wigs…

1.) Fashionable, Protects Hair & Scalp

  • Wearing wigs nowadays is a fashionable quick fix to styling your hair and rocking a different hair color or style without damaging it.
  • It also gives their hair and scalp a break from harsh chemical hair products, flat irons, curling irons and blow dryers.

2). Religious Reasons

Some women wear wigs because of their religious beliefs such as the Orthodox Jewish married women. They are required to cover their hair because of biblical requirement that symbolizes modesty.

3). Medical Reasons

Other women wear wigs because of medical reasons and want to camouflage their hair loss.

  • autoimmune disease like lupus, alopecia areata, polycystic ovary syndrome, psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis attack hair follicles for no reason, causing hair loss.
  • genetics women inherit a gene from one or both parents. This is called female-pattern hair loss or androgenetic alopecia.
  • diseases or infections such as ringworm of the scalp, syphilis, anemia, thyroid disorders (hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism) cancer can cause loss of hair.
  • medications like blood thinners (anticoagulants) or chemotherapy also causes this.
  • drastic weight loss caused by surgery or intense illness will cause hair loss over a short period of time.
  • poor nutrition lack of protein or iron in the diet.
  • vitamin A  is key for good vision, a healthy immune system, and cell growth. However taking too much vitamin can trigger hair loss.
  • changes in hormone levels such as pregnancy, birth control, menstrual cycle and menopause.

I never wore a wig before but recently I was given an opportunity to review one from bhairextension.com. Actually, I was happy to try out a wig because there are days I am so busy I don’t have time to style my long locks. In addition, I always wanted to try out the bold ombre hairstyle but was too afraid to take the plunge. An ombre hairstyle is where your hair goes from dark to light. Basically, this hairstyle gives the illusion of your hair growing back in or in some cases highlighted by the sun.

The wig I am wearing is the Outre Synthetic Lace Wig. It is silky, straight, and kanikalon heat resistant. I found that the color in person looks way better than the picture on the website. A synthetic wig cap (comes in different sizes) and hair clips are sewn into the wig which made it easy to put on my head. I was impressed how real it felt and how natural it looks. I plan to trim the wig to my real hair length to make it look more realistic.

  1. Wig or weave shaming shouldn’t be a thing. Like you said it gives your hair a break and there are bigger issues in the world then to be worrying about if someone is wearing a wig.

  2. Wow…I like that wig that you’re trying. Looks classy. And I never heard of this religious reason of covering your head with a wig. That’s interesting.

  3. I had no idea there were so many uses for wigs! I had thought about trying out a wig, in my line of work I end up changing my hair color a lot… this would SAVE my hair!

  4. The more I look around, wigs are becoming more of a fashion. Honestly, I didn’t know about the biblical reason. I found that to be very interesting.

  5. I didn’t know people wore wigs for religious reasons. Wigs that look like real hair are very expensive. I could see buying one if you feel self conscious of the way you look. But it seems like such a waste of money to buy one for fashion.

  6. i saw whatever works for you is all good. i love how some wigs look. i would love to try them out some day.

  7. Wigs are great, they have a lot of uses. My daughters usually have them for cosplays and for Halloween. I actually didn’t know that it was used for religious reasons. You learn something everyday.

  8. I’ve always found it interesting why women wear wigs. I grew up in a predominantly Jewish neighborhood and the women wore wings. They even brought them to the hair salon and would pick them up at a later time/date. It made me want to do it myself, but I’ve never found a wig that I really liked.

We have a family friend who was diagnosed with a hair loss disease and she doesn’t grow hair anywhere on her body and has been wearing a wig for YEARS.

  9. I do think wigs are making a huge comeback. They were first so popular in the 70s. Now they are for medical reasons, religious reasons and fashion reasons! I think that giving a break from ironing and curling is a good reason. And also, one can change a bit in no time and that’s great! I hope you have a great day!
