Many people suffer from environmental allergies. Allergies are an abnormal response of the immune system. People with allergies have an immune system that reacts to a usually harmless substance in the environment. One of the environmental allergy that many of us (including myself) suffer from is Dust mite allergy. This type of allergy is caused by a reaction you get due to microscopic bugs that feed off flakes of dead skin that people and pets shed. You find these disgusting bugs commonly in bedding, sheets, furniture, rug, stuffed animals, clothing and upholstery. Some allergy symptoms people get to dust mite allergy include: watery eyes, sneezing, stuffy nose, itching, runny nose, asthma (coughing, wheezing, difficult in breathing, chest tightness).
My Allergist told me the only kind of allergy barrier bedding that benefits allergy sufferers are hypoallergenic bedding because they encase the mattress, pillow and box spring. Hypoallergenic sheets are specifically designed to block dust mites from coming through to where their food supply (skin flakes) is. Once their food supply is cut off they eventually die. One way I treat my dust mite allergies is by using hypoallergenic plastic overs on my pillows, matters and box springs. I also use microfiber hypoallergenic sheets like the one I recently received to review from Mellanni (disclaimer: Please note even though I received this product for free all my opinions are my own). These sheets are exceptionally durable, smooth and comfortable. They also cost as little as $20.00.
Ways to kill dust mites:
- use hypoallergenic bedding
- dust, declutter your room
- use wood or metal headboards
use zippered dust-mite covers
use pillows filled with polyester fibers instead of kapok or feathers
- keep humidity down by using a dehumidifier and/or air conditioner
- wash bedding in very hot water (over 130 F) once a week to kill dust mites
vacuum, sweep and dust daily
- use wood or metal headboard instead of upholster
- avoid wall to wall carpeting
- wash throw rugs in hot water if possible
My experience with Mellanni Bed Sheets:
I have difficulties finding sheets to fit perfectly on my oversized queen mattress. I was pleased the Mellanni fitted sheets fit like a glove on my bed. In addition, their pillow case fit good on my large pillows. They were easy to clean and dry. They didn’t shrink at all when I washed them and the color didn’t fade. I love the white color because it makes the room look so clean. But they also come in variety of colors as well. The company claim these sheets are suppose to be winkle free but as you can see in the pictures they have winkles on them.
Mellanni claim their sheets are:
- high quality
- deep fitted
- shrink resistant
- wrinkle resistant
- easy maintain
- fade resistant
- stain resistant
